Choosing an Accountant for Your Business

"What factors should I look at when choosing an accountant?"

Traditionally, someone who started a business and needed an accountant was limited to how far they can drive to meet their accountant.  For years you would take a stack of paper to your accountant's office and then you go pick up your tax return and your financials.  Technology and the internet has changed all that, making it much easier and convenient to work with your accountant, and choose an accountant that best fits your business needs.  That's what our firm is showing by working 100% remotely with our clients.

The most important factor when choosing an accountant is finding somebody that meets your needs rather than find somebody whose office is close to yours.  Setting expectations with your accountant up front is the best first step.  We hear new clients come in and say that their accountant wasn't accessible.  They would try to call or email them and it would take a long time to hear back, or sometimes they would talk to their assistant and never hear from the accountant.  Some important questions to ask your potential accountant are:

1. How do I get in touch with you?  Text, Phone, Email?  Make sure they are willing to use whatever works best for you.

2. How long will it take you to respond?  24 hours from reaching out?  48 hours?  Our accountants always get back with clients within 24 hours of receiving communication because we understand speed is important to businesses today.

3. Have they worked with other clients in your industry?  Making sure the accountant is familiar with your industry is important because you want them to be able to leverage that experience to help you navigate the growth of your business.
